There are so many benefits to getting enough sleep, and it’s so much more than just being able to step in front of the world and find yourself awake enough to pay attention. People all over the world are working while sleep deprived. They’re studying while desperate for a few extra hours of sleep. We push the boundaries of our natural sleeping patterns as it is, and it’s worse for us as we get older; we just cannot bounce back as fast as we used to. Sleep deprivation comes with a list of side effects as long as your arm – it’s why it was used as a torture method in the war. Your brain does not function without a decent rest, and some of the side effects of a lack of sleep include things like depression, obesity, suppressed immune system and a much bigger risk of heart disease. It can throw you off kilter and you’ll age faster, too, which is not something that anyone wants!
So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at how you can get a better night’s sleep and start living rather than just existing.
Know What Quality Sleep Is
Before you understand what you need for a good night of sleep, you need to know what quality sleep actually is. You may not prioritise sleep, but you really should. Sleep isn’t just to get you to breakfast the next day. Sleep rests your body and your mind and ensures that you are getting the best possible rest. It’s a process of rebuilding, where your body will heal the muscles and the aches and pains of the day. It will slow down the process of aging and give your energy a boost. It’s a must – and you need to know what high quality sleep is to prioritise it.
Know How You Sleep
What are your current sleep patterns? Ideally, you’d fall asleep when tired and wake naturally as your body wakes you. Unfortunately, someone decided to invent calendars and clocks, and our bodies are under constant pressure to conform to time. We push ourselves beyond what’s reasonable to make it to work on time, and so you need to know what time you went to bed, whether you feel asleep fast enough and how long you slept. You also need to know how fresh you felt when you woke up – and then compare your answers to those questions week to week to establish the best way that you sleep.
Get As Much Sunlight As Possible

It sounds counter-intuitive, given that darkness is better, but we’re not talking about sleeping under the light of the sun. Those who get the best sleep also get as much sunshine and daylight as possible when they’re awake. Melatonin is a must for a good night of sleep and it’s imperative that you get enough of it to feel rested and relaxed at night time. You need to get enough if you want to sleep well.
Let Go Of Screen Time
Around an hour before you go to bed, turn off your smartphone and your TV. Talk to your partner, get a book to read or play a board game. Have a long, luxurious bubble bath with your magazines. The artificial blue light that emanates from your screens plays havoc with your brain. So, let the screens go an hour before bed time and you’ll be able to relax.
Cut Back On Caffeine
This is a no-brainer. If you use caffeine to wake up, then it stands to reason that you should stop drinking it so that you can go to sleep. Soda with caffeine and coffee/tea should be put down after lunch time. Use natural boosters for energy and enjoy those instead of chucking down espresso!
Your bedroom needs to be at the optimum temperature for you to sleep well. You shouldn’t be either too hot or too cold, as your core temperature will drop when you sleep. You should keep your bedroom balanced at all times for you to be able to get through the night happy and healthy!
Go To Bed At A Decent Time
Stop staying up until 3am before you fall asleep. Listen to your body when it’s begging for rest at 10pm. You don’t need to stay up stupidly late every night to get a decent sleep.
