For years, I have pictured myself frolicking in a gorgeous, sprawling farm, lush with edible plants and useful herbs.
But, I live in suburbia.

And my soil is basically beach sand.
In 2012, I resolved to terraform my grassed urban yard into the verdant vision of my mind’s eye.
Since then, it has been roughly equal parts triumph and disaster.
Because when I began, I knew nothing about gardening.
Plus I had three small kids at home, a teeny-tiny budget and over-optimism as a decent handicap.
I made some pretty impressive mistakes.
In the early years, I surfed a steep learning curve.
So many experts! Multiple disasters! Much to learn and unlearn…
I have a curious, experimental mindset. I’m willing to give just about anything a go.
As far as my garden was concerned, I got used to living in a state of perpetual astonishment and occasional disappointment.
Yet slowly, I found my groove. I began to figure it out.
I know for sure, the learning will never be done. That’s all part of the fun!
Grow where you are planted.
In the last eight years, I have grown. My high-maintaince, thirsty lawns have been replaced with edible garden beds.
We built a chicken coop and run.
I became a beekeeper!
I have collected over 200 different varieties of edible plants, and house my seed band in a repurposed library card drawers.
I compost everything I can get my hands on, with two worm farms and three compost tumblers on the go!

Growing, eating and using the produce from my own yard expanded your horizons, in a way I simply hadn’t anticipated.
It was certainly a surprise to me. As I dug around my own yard, I contended with the wider issues of climate change, animal welfare, water use, soil improvement, pollution, heirloom seeds, the economics of abundance, pesticides, herbicides, and the consequences of varied agricultural practices into sharper, local, personal focus.
It changed me. Fundamentally, for the better.
Garden, Kitchen and Apothecary.
Once I began growing, I became curious about eating and using the plants of my harvest. It’s almost impossible for me to speak of one, without the others! Garden, Kitchen and Apothecary, they are all linked. So many of the plants in my garden have multiple uses. Some are edible, others are therapudic, all are beautiful and useful.
Today, almost 8 years after I began, the garden is changing again.
In 2019, I’m replacing my crumbling front garden beds with a new layout, designed to last longer, produce more goodness and be easier to maintain.
Work is already underway, I’m anticipating it to be finally completed by the summer. Watch this space!
I am also making some changes to my greenhouse, so I can grow more of my own seeds and propagate more of my own plants.
