Summer is the season where most of us spend a good chunk of our time enjoying the sunshine in our backyard. Whether it’s to relax and catch the rays, spend some time poolside or hosting a family and friends barbeque, it’s nice to be able to make the most of your additional living space. However, there are some tasks that need to be kept on top of in order to be able to relax rather than work.
Here are some of the essential gardening tasks for the summer months:
Caring For Your Containers
Having containers in your garden is a great way to add colour and keep it tidy. You can add structure and colour to seating areas as well as adding more options in small gardens. If you have smaller pot they will dry out very quickly, especially if they’re positioned in direct sunlight, this means that pots need to be checked and watered throughout the day. In order to keep them healthy, you need to make sure the compost is moist and run water through it until it runs through the drainage holes. This time of the year you can’t rely on the rain to do this for you. If your containers are full of really leafy plants then you may need to give them extra attention.
Replace or Mend
Now is the perfect time to replace or repair items in your garden, have a look at any timber and asses how healthy it is. Look closely at your raised beds, your greenhouse, lean-to’s, covering and seating areas. If anything needs to be repaired act now so you can enjoy your outside space throughout the summer months. This is the time that you should start looking at your landscape design as you can start to asses which areas may need touching up or maybe even redesigning.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to make sure your garden is completely clear. After you’ve completed your prep work in the spring, summer is the time that you can really delve into getting your space clear of any remaining debris. It’s easy to spend time in the garden in the summer, so before you sit and enjoy the sun, why not spend a little time keeping it tidy. Of course, you will want to avoid the middle of the day, it can become too hot to work in the garden in the sun.
Pruning is something that needs to be completed throughout the year. In the summer you should look at maintaining your plants only, and be careful not to cause any damage, Cutting and pruning plants in the height of summer can lead to you accidentally killing plants as the fresh-cut can get burnt. If you’re going to prune in the summer make sure it’s when the sun isn’t directly in your yard or towards the end of the season before the autumn sets in.
Gardening can be an all-year-round hobby, you just need to keep on top of the seasonal tasks. Do you have any other summer garden tasks that you can share in the comments?
