I created these Peppermint and Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Bombs as an alternative to using air fresheners.
Air fresheners are a big pet peeve of mine. Honestly, I loathe them.
I get it, things can sometimes get a bit stinky, sure. Especially in my house, it seems!
But just I can’t fathom how polluting the air with an aerosol generated chemical cocktail and VOC’s is considered a reasonable solution to, a little bit of whiff.
Because if something smells nasty, it is asking to be cleaned or ventilated. Or both!
Spraying a “nice” smell over a stench, without removing its source is just crazy.
The kids are generally pretty good at keeping their bathroom clean. But occasionally, there’s a bit of a mess that calls for greater measures and I keep these Peppermint and Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Bombs in the bathroom for that very occasion!
These bombs are made much like a bath bomb, but use the more alkaline washing soda and leave out the salt and oil.
Washing soda is more alkaline than baking soda and when it combines with the citric acid, the reaction creates carbon dioxide bubble that help to lift grime from the surface.
The liquid Castile soap helps to clean the toilet bowl surface and break down any stubborn, grimy matter stuck on the bowl.
Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties and are also pungent enough to eclipse any ahem, residual odours.
I keep these versatile ingredients in my home apothecary, but they are all available at your local supermarket. If you haven’t downloaded my free Guide To Creating Your Home Apothecary it is available now in the Subscriber Resource Library.

Peppermint and Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Bombs
You will need
- 3/4 cup washing soda
- 1/4 cup citric acid
- 1 tablespoon (you may need more) of liquid Castile soap
- 10 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- Silicone ice cube mould
Preparation
Mix the washing soda and citric acid in a glass bowl and stir until evenly blended.
Add the essential oils, drop by drop and mix until blended through.
Carefully add the liquid castile soap, the mix will fizz, so add small amounts and stir until the mix clumps and has the texture of wet sand.
Spoon the mix into the mould. I push it in quite firmly using the back of a teaspoon. Allow to set overnight.
Pop bombs out of moulds and store in an airtight container.
These Peppermint and Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Bombs look and smell like big breath mints! If you have young children, be sure to keep them well out of reach.
How to use your Peppermint and Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Bombs
Once the toilet has been flushed, simply pop in a bomb, and as it fizzes, give the bowl a swish with the toilet brush. You may wish to flush again to remove any ahem, poo residue and your toilet will not only be sparkling clean, but smelling fresh too. Until next time!
If you have a funky waft coming from a bath or shower drain, try one of these bombs to clean the drain.
Freshen your Toilet Without Polluting It!
We have a toilet roll holder in next to the toilet bowl, a few drops of essential oil to the inside of the toilet paper roll. Make sure your toilet is always well ventilated and clean and it should smell like sunshine and rainbows!
I am a little confused as to what 1/1 citric acid means.
Apologies and thanks Yvonne, it was a typo! It has been amended to read 1/4 cup of citric acid.
